As per usual, the RSPB is hosting its anual 'Big Garden Birdwatch' from the 26th - 27th January 2013. Since 1979, the RSPB have held a yearly count of british garden birds recorded by the general public, however it hasn't always been the UK's number one means of collecting key statistics and figures regarding garden wildlife. When the 'Big Garden Birdwatch' started out, its sole purpose was to provide a winter activity for the youth members of the RSPB and it wasn't until 2001 when adults were first allowed to enter the 'BGB'. Today, over half a million people take part annually and with numbers increasing, we are heading for the largest birdwatch yet!
For those who are new to the 'Big Garden Birdwatch', taking part is easy; all you need to do is follow the instructions bellow:

- Print off the counting sheet from the bottom of the page
- Register at the RSPB's website for the 'BGB', to do so click on the image of the Big Garden Birdwatch above
- On the 26th or 27th of January find a place where you can clearly see all of your garden and sit (or stand) for an hour and complete the printed sheet
- Tick off the amount of species you see at one time (for example if you see 5 wood-pigeon at once, you would only tick off another if you saw 6 at once)
- Congratulations and thank you for taking the time to help the worlds largest birding charity collect vital information
